Places forgetting together and green spaces offer a crucial added value when it comes to personal well-being. Short distances in everyday life are equally important. Within a city, especially with increased population density, residential quarters make such a contribution.

The design of the new Bilker Westend quarter is such a place where these requirements are met. A former industrial estate at the southern entrance to Düsseldorf is integrated into the existing urban fabric: CROSS Architecture, commissioned by the Gentes Group, designed an urban quarter with a future-oriented mix of housing, service, commercial and daycare facilities right on the busy Völklinger Strasse.

The concept was developed in a participatory process, carried out in close collaboration with the city and the immediate neighbourhood. The needs and requirements were worked out in detail — a neighbourhood for everyone is the goal.

In addition to an open residential complex and an urban plaza, spacious green areas serve as the focal point — a green oasis, or rather a jungle in the urban space, served as inspiration. A daycare centre is also part of the planning. The plaza is designed as a communicative place that invites people to linger and meet.

The 16-storey MarkOne office high-rise located in the quarter also follows an integrative concept. In this office tower, CROSS Architecture conceived a neighbourhood lounge for the Bilker Westend community. Co-working, gastronomy and a neighbourhood kitchen with an event space were also included in the design of the location. Its intensive façade greening leads to valuable views as well as increased biodiversity and natural cooling of the quarter.

"For us, the great attraction was to awaken this property at the transition to the city center from its slumber. We wanted to revitalize the area in order to create a new permeability and thus enable a leap from the city across the railroad line into the Bilk district."
