Historic houses contribute to the atmosphere of urban spaces. Many residents chose consciously to live in those charming homes with their spatial qualities. New adjustments can ensure that those buildings meet the needs of the current residents and remain as cultural heritage within the cities.
In the existing situation three distinct volumes characterized the back of the house. This resulted in small closed-off rooms. By adjusting the volume just slightly to keep the connection with the neighbouring house. This small change, however, ensured that there is room for a spacious and modern kitchen.

As a completion of the new volume a cubic roof light was added. Together with a large glass sliding door it brings in sufficient natural daylight to the kitchen and the existing living room.

In the interior a white sleek looking kitchen is contrasting with a custom-made cherry wood wall, perfectly combining elegance with warmth and atmosphere. A floor of warm grey flagstone extends almost seamlessly from kitchen to the terrace, blurring the line between indoors and outdoors. This effect is strengthened by the large glass front, providing uninterrupted views to the garden.
The extension is an improvement of the spatial experience and accommodates the wishes of the current inhabitants while finding the perfect balance between historic and modern.
